Working With the Moon::: Ancient Rituals, New Beginnings & Manifestation

We all could use a little magic in our lives. I’m here to help you see how the moon can help us do just that. The moon has been woven into the myths and folk traditions of every civilization through the ages. From ancient temples to modern spiritual practices, humanity has always looked to the moon for guidance, rhythm, intuition, and transformation.

Harnessing the moon’s power has been an ancient tradition across cultures for millennia, originating in places such as Egypt and Babylonia. Ancient peoples observed the heavens closely and aligned daily life with lunar cycles. Farmers planted crops by the moon, healers worked with lunar timing, and spiritual ceremonies were often held according to her phases.

Getting back to the basics reminds us that ancient cultures structured much of their lives around the moon and her phases. Archaeological evidence even suggests that early humans used the moon as a natural timekeeper. From planting and harvesting to fertility rituals, navigation, rest cycles, and spiritual ceremonies, the moon offered both practical guidance and mystical meaning.

Today, many people are reconnecting with lunar living as a way to slow down, become more intentional, deepen intuition, and align with natural rhythms again. Moon rituals can become a beautiful way to reconnect with yourself, your goals, and your inner wisdom.

Phase 1 ||| New Moon or Dark Moon

The Beginning of the Cycle | Cleansing | Resetting | Manifestation

Technically speaking, when the moon is new, it is positioned exactly between the sun and the earth. It appears dark to us because the illuminated side of the moon faces away from Earth. This deeply restorative phase lasts for about three days.

The new moon phase can be seen as a blank slate– the moon as nothing, yet simultaneously full of infinite potential. Darkness is sacred because it is where germination takes place. Seeds begin underground, unseen before they bloom. This phase invites us into that same sacred space of renewal, rest, and rebirth.

At the exact new moon, we are still in the liminal unknown– the in-between space where possibilities exist before they fully form. Many practitioners plant seeds of spiritual intention around the new moon– incantations, affirmations, or manifestation rituals during the waxing crescent phase, when the moon first begins visibly growing again. In my personal practice, I have always performed new moon meditation + journal ritual here as well, but ultimately, follow your intuition and work with the timing that feels most aligned for your energy and personal practice.  We are in the energy of each moon phase for 1-3 days (before and after) as well, so if you miss the actual day..keep in mind, you havent missed your window to harness the potent manifestation energies of the NEW MOON.

I’m actually a bit opposite from most people in that I feel energized and inspired around the NEW moon, while feeling more exhausted during the FULL moon. Most people I speak to experience the reverse. It is more typical to feel jazzed up around the full moon and slightly tired around the new, hence the term lunacy.  This is such an important reminder that moon work is deeply personal. Work your magic where it feels best for you + as always follow your innate knowing; intuition.

As the moon begins to grow again, she radiates her light and reflects fresh creative energy onto all worldly things. This is the energetic planting season– a powerful time to set intentions and plant seeds for what you wish to draw into your life.

This may look like:

  • Initiating a new relationship
  • Starting a new business or project
  • Applying for a new job
  • Getting a fresh haircut or reinventing your style
  • Beginning a healing journey
  • Creating healthier habits
  • Stepping into a new version of yourself

The dark moon period is also about discovery. Be especially aware of new information flowing into your sphere, intuitive nudges, synchronicities, dreams, and subtle inner guidance. The new moon asks us to slow down enough to actually hear our soul speak once again.

Take time to engage in nourishing activities that reconnect you to your inner world. Journal your desires. Reflect on your goals. Sit quietly with your thoughts. Create space for inspiration to emerge naturally.

The new moon is a beautiful time to begin something new & plant seeds of intention for all that you wish to draw into your life in the next six months.

Crystals for New Moon Rituals

Adding crystals and their unique energetic frequencies to your moon rituals can help amplify intentions, strengthen intuition, and support manifestation work.

Some of my favorite crystals for dark moon and new moon rituals include:

  • Moonstone ::: intuition, feminine energy, emotional balance
  • Selenite ::: cleansing, spiritual clarity, energetic purification
  • Citrine ::: abundance, confidence, manifestation
  • Himalayan Salt ::: grounding, cleansing, energetic renewal
  • Green Jade ::: prosperity, harmony, heart healing
  • Pink Lemurian ::: divine feminine energy, heart expansion, emotional healing, gentle spiritual awakening
  • Rose Quartz ::: unconditional love, self-love, compassion, emotional harmony, and opening the heart chakra
    • Pink, heart-centered crystals are especially supportive during the new moon because they aid us in softening into trust, receive with openness, and align our manifestations with the energy of unconditional love + feminine flow rather than force.

You can place these crystals on your altar or in a sacred intentional space, hold them during meditation, sleep with them nearby, or simply keep them beside your journal while setting intentions.

Simple New Moon Affirmation Ritual

Light a soft pink or white candle, take a few deep breaths, place your hands over your heart, and say aloud:::

“I welcome new opportunities and experiences.
I trust the unfolding of my path.
I am open to aligned abundance, creativity, and growth.”

“I stand firm in my energy. What is mine strengthens me, what is not fades away.”

“Today I move with clarity. I create with power. I magnetize to me what is mine.”

Allow yourself to truly feel deeply, the energy of possibility.

The moon reminds us every single month that endings are not permanent. Darkness is not empty. Rest is not failure. There is wisdom in slowing down, beauty in beginning again, and magic in honoring the cyclical nature of life.
